Subject: Objections and suggestions on the Draft 7th Western Ghats ESA Notification

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding the Draft 7th Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) Notification. I strongly object to any reduction in the proposed protected area or removal of villages from it. Please finalise the notification without weakening its protections.

The Western Ghats are vital for our drinking water, farming, forests and wildlife. I am concerned that cutting forests, mining, quarrying and large construction projects will put people at greater risk of water shortages, floods and landslides. Protecting these hills is essential for our safety and our children’s future.

I request that all areas and villages covered in the draft remain protected and that Dodamarg taluka in Maharashtra also be included. I also request cancellation of the proposed New Mahabaleshwar Hill Station project because of concerns about damage to forests, water sources and the lives of local villagers.

Please protect the homes, farming and livelihoods of local people and involve gram sabhas in decisions. The notification, maps and village lists should be made available in local languages so everyone can understand them. Kindly consider these objections and finalise strong protection for the Western Ghats without further delay.
